Dominican Republic culture and history
Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Dominican Republic was the first New World colony to be settled by the Spanish. Originally inhabited by the Taino people, the country's gold deposits and fertile land made it a very attractive territory for colonisation. The country was ceded to the French but independence was finally granted in 1844. The country's wealth was primarily from cane sugar and the large plantations are still there with their grand houses.
Evidence of this rich and colourful past is reflected in its picturesque towns with their cobbled plazas and gracious 16th century Spanish colonial buildings that lend an historic charm to today’s cosmopolitan lifestyle. The spirit and charm of the Dominican Republic is captured in its Latin inspired Caribbean music, the national pastime of dancing the merengue and mouth-watering food.
